BEFORE THE FALL by Joan Pancoe
“The deeper you go into life, the more you understand the immortality within you. A moment comes when you can see that death is nothing but changing clothes, houses or forms—nothing dies, nothing can die. Death is the greatest illusion of all.” OSHO
Dear Friend,
As summer winds down, I’ve been reflecting on the dominant themes in my life this season—triggered by friends, family and clients—as well as storylines in the media that have captured the attention of the mass consciousness.
More than usual, it seems, I’ve been hearing about the untimely loss of loved ones—which brings to mind one of the most famous stories of the Buddha:
After losing her only child, Kisa Gotami became desperate and asked if anyone can help her. Her sorrow was so great that many thought she had already lost her mind. An old man told her to seek out the Buddha.
Buddha told her that before he could bring the child back to life, she should find white mustard seeds from a family where no one had died. She desperately went from house to house, but to her disappointment, she could not find one house that had not suffered the death of a family member.
Finally the realization struck her that there is no house free from mortality. She returned to the Buddha, who comforted her and preached this truth:
“Though one should live a hundred years
without seeing the Deathless State,
yet better indeed, is a single day’s life
of one who sees the Deathless State.”
. . . And she became enlightened.
As we get older, all of us—sooner or later—get to experience the reality that more and more of our loved ones are no longer physically present in our lives. Thus, it becomes ever more important, not just to appreciate how precious and poignant it is to be fully present in each and every moment with those we cherish, but to remember:
I. To always maintain the witnessing perspective, no matter what is going on—and never take anything personally.
II. The deepest secret of Tantra: Accept everything just as it is in the moment. Resistance creates suffering.
III. The Flow of Life is not under our control; our true power lies in how we choose to respond and move with it.
IV. If we go for the healing and growth in any situation and simultaneously enjoy the ride, we’ll have no regrets later.
When I meditated on how ALL the in-coming energies— cosmic, galactic and planetary—will be affecting us this Fall and beyond, the message I received of what is being co-created through us and for us continues to be: Divine Orderly Chaos.
As a perfect example of this high-level “re-ordering,” we can look back to when China invaded Tibet on October 7th, 1950. Was this good news or bad news for Tibet and the world at large? Well, certainly bad news for Tibetans in the short run. However, when we look at this event from a very long-range perspective, perhaps it’s good news for the world in terms of spreading the Light of Consciousness.
Similarly, as Divine Orderly Chaos reigns for the foreseeable future on the planet, this bad news/good news scenario will also be playing out in our individual circumstances. Holding the higher perspective that all is unfolding perfectly for our karmic healing, soul growth and the evolution of human consciousness is the key . . . if we want to maintain inner peace and stability.
There are two ways of relating to the rollercoaster of life: It’s a double-edge sword of either fear or excitement. Both make us feel really alive, but which brings us more joy?
If we can witness events as they unfold—no matter how tumultuous—and stay calm, balanced and compassionate at our core of Being, we’ll get to experience all the sweetness of life as an exhilarating adventure in consciousness, like tasting honey off the razor’s edge.
Besides, we’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose by raising our view to the timeless perspective of the Soul while in the Earth Game. As, all rollercoaster rides, no matter how circuitous and death-defying, ultimately lead to the same destination: We get to drop our bodies without losing our Higher Minds. And, not only is physical death absolutely safe, it’s also the only thing in life that’s absolutely certain. That being said, why waste precious time worrying about the inevitable, when we can fully savor each moment’s potential for expanding our awareness?

On a personal note, as many of you may know, (especially if you’ve read my memoir, COSMIC SUGAR), my soulmate and psychic partner, the healer Jim Rush, dropped his body after a prolonged illness on his 60th birthday in 1997 after twenty-seven glorious years together— in which we got to play out a very full range of karmic roles. And while it took me over a year to stop missing the comfort of his physical presence, I have to tell you that his soul and heart-connection is ever-present.
I know, I know, it may be easier for me to say this because, as a trance channel, Jim is always available for comment, (although it is a long-distance call now:)). But I can assure you that direct contact with our loved ones in other dimensions is available to each of us—if we are open to communicating with them through our inner receptivity and the dream state.
In the first year after his passing, Jim took me on a trip, in a waking dream, to some of the higher-frequency dimensions where he plays—and all I can say is: “What a Technicolor adventure we’re in for! I call it “unrelenting spaciousness.” It is, without doubt, what I had always been seeking—and, simultaneously, overwhelmingly terrifying—but in a good way, of course, as it blew the mind’s circuits wide open.
After this last big adventure in other dimensions, Jim told me, “Remember this trip, Sweets, because I won’t be taking you on any more for a while.” He knew that if I spent too much time playing in higher planes of consciousness with him, I would enjoy it so much that it would distract me from the work and play I still have left to do to fulfill my soul assignment for this incarnation.
In closing, it’s important to keep in mind that longing for other dimensions—for whatever reason—before it’s our time to dwell there is wasting the opportunities available for us in this life. We’re not here to distract ourselves by checking-out or leaving our bodies—but rather to work on opening ourselves up to experiencing these higher frequencies while being fully embodied. In other words, learning how to be in heaven all the time.
So, let’s celebrate these last few weeks of summer by making the absolute most of our paradise here on Earth, as—on the other side—our loved ones laugh and sing and play . . . and wait for us . . . in perfect Time.
