JUPITER IN SCORPIO: “It’s Not Personal, It’s Just Business” (Karmic Business, That Is)

“Everything happens for you, not to you.”
BYRON KATIE
Dear ONE,
When Jupiter, planet of good fortune and ruler of Divine Law on Earth, moves into take-no-prisoners Scorpio on October 10, we may get to witness an unprecedented surge of greed and avarice on the world stage, as well as the karmic consequences thereof.
But before we unpack everything we need to know to make the most of this most intense transit of Jupiter through depth-charging Scorpio, we still have five weeks to review all our lessons from the transit of consciousness-expanding Jupiter in relationship-loving Libra. Over the last thirteen months, this transit set up the theme of wisdom through love by asking us whether it’s more important for us to be:
1. Loving rather than right. As we evolve, this becomes viscerally self-evident on the heart levels.
2. Truthful rather than dishonest. This includes sins of omission, especially for selfish reasons such as fear of loss, with the exception of ruthless sharing that could harm a loved one.
3. A giver rather than a taker. There’s nothing as heart-expanding as the experience that making others happy gives us the most happiness of all.
How have you been doing with the above lessons? With Jupiter in Libra wrapping up this month, it’s time to reflect on the health of all our relationships and make the effort to clarify and tie up any loose ends, especially in our major bonds. For more assistance, please read:
JUPITER in LIBRA: “And in the End, the Love You Take Is Equal to the Love You Make”
Now on to Jupiter’s ingress into Scorpio. Traditionally, whichever area of the life Jupiter is transiting through lays a foundation for a 12-year cycle of positive energy and abundance on ALL levels to flow in. In the last year, while Jupiter was moving through Libra, these vibrational energies had quite a different focus and theme than what we will be experiencing in the coming 13 months in Scorpio.
Jupiter is the natural ruler of the 9th house, which governs our philosophy of life, search for the truth, higher teaching and learning, communications on a mass scale (i.e., publishing, movies, internet, etc.), as well as consciousness-expanding journeys.
Jupiter’s journey through passionate Scorpio is ruled by transformational Pluto and is the natural ruler of the 8th house. This means that the transformation of our beings will be positively highlighted by Jupiter as it pertains to our sexual and psychic energies, as well as our attitudes about metaphysics and mortality in general.
So, for example, if our intimate partner is going through something which seriously affects us, the high road is to not take their moods or actions personally. Why? Because one of the lessons of Jupiter in Scorpio is to mind our own business—in other words, not to get overly involved with the busyness of other people’s karmic business as it plays out. But rather, to choose to support them by creating and sustaining a safe, sacred container or space for them to go through whatever they need to go through, without trying to control or fix them on our timetable.
Wherever Scorpio resides in our birth charts, transiting Jupiter’s energies will shine on us in all our endeavors in the affairs of that area of our life. This is especially true for those of us with our ascendant, midheaven or personal planets in Scorpio—the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars—in addition to the other water signs of Cancer and Pisces.
This transit will bring in an abundance of creative and transformational opportunities, particularly if we’re willing to go deeper and stretch ourselves further than ever before. This will allow all our bonds—with ourselves, others and Life itself—to become more intense and alive as we experience an opening, expansion and growth of our heart/mind (Taoist don’t differentiate) in all our affairs.

Whenever I do an astrology reading and inform clients which house or area of the life Saturn will be moving through—which is usually a two-and-a-half-year transit—they always exclaim: “But why does it have to be there?” And I respond, with a smile: “Well, our karmic lessons or, as I like to call them, FGOs (f**kin growth opportunities) have to be somewhere.”
Whereas with a Jupiter transit, averaging one year in every house or area of the life and being, that’s where all the good stuff will be flowing in. So, no one ever complains about that!
For example, if Jupiter is transiting one’s 2nd house—more cash and prizes will begin to flow in, or at least the foundation will be laid for the next 12-year cycle of material abundance. And, so it is, with the 5th house of romance, creativity and children; the 7th house of committed partnership (that’s when I met my sweetheart:)); and the 10th house of career opportunities.
In my chart, Jupiter in Scorpio will be crossing over my midheaven into my career house in February 2018, which means that I will start feeling a new level of momentum building work-wise just as soon as Jupiter moves into Scorpio in October.
In 1994, two 12-year Jupiter cycles ago, I was readying to publish my first book, OPENINGS: A Guide to Psychic Living in the Real World, which allowed me to acclimate to having a more public persona through my work. This led to my willingness to put myself out there more with workshops and lectures.
Then, in 2006 when Jupiter crossed my midheaven again, I was the keynote speaker at a large astrological conference, which led to many more clients and even more comfort going public with my work. No small feat, as not only is Scorpio on the ascendant or midheaven quite private and secretive (as is my Capricorn ascendant quite reserved and cautious initially with others), but the karmic ramifications of going public brought up quite a lot of terror to be healed—from past lives when I got whacked for being psychic in the public eye.
But since a Jupiter cycle just keeps on expanding for 12-years, in the last cycle I’ve: published my second book, an erotic/psychic memoir, Cosmic Sugar; created my own website, started sending out these newsletters to an email list that just keeps growing; and had a TV documentary made about my work in 2012, which, of course, really kicked me out of my karmic shell once and for all. For more on this:
So, if you’ve been thinking about gifting yourself or a loved one with an astrology reading from a unique psychic perspective—or are due for your yearly transit update—there couldn’t be a better time!
If you’d like to make the most of this Jupiter transit, an astrological reading from a soul-level karmic perspective is a highly useful tool. A reading allows you to be more awake and alert to the timing of opportunities coming your way for abundance on all levels.
Once you know which areas of your life will be positively highlighted this year, especially through the opportunities you attract, you can focus more energy and attention there. This is a brilliant way to consciously create and optimize the abundance that is your divine birthright and allow it to flow into those parts of you and your personal reality that Jupiter in Scorpio will be shining on through November 9, 2018.

Scorpio has three levels of conscious spiritual evolution: the scorpion, the eagle and the dove. Gurdjieff’s spiritual philosophy was rooted in the idea that although our default state is a sort of waking sleep, we are capable of waking up. Just as a scorpion level of unconsciousness can evolve over time to the awakened state of the dove. But if one is still at the embryonic scorpion stage you most likely wouldn’t be reading this anyway—as you’d be too busy getting into or attempting to acquire other people’s business.
The middle level of Scorpio is the eagle, which is epitomized by enlightened self-interest on the ego levels. And the highest level is the dove, exemplified by consciously choosing to take the highest road karmically without ego attachment to outcomes. Here are some tips to clarify the three levels:
1.Those operating at the lowest levels of Jupiter in Scorpio—i.e., greed and unenlightened self-interest—are not our business. But rather, they’re all taken care of by the laws of karma, sooner or later.
2. Busyness with other’s business distracts us from standing in our own power with healthy psychic boundaries. For more see: Psychic Empowerment Practices
3. These boundaries allow us to operate from a place of faith in the Flow as an open channel to infinite levels of divine abundance on all levels so that we can enjoy being generous because it feels so good.
The unevolved, unconscious soul will tend to operate at the lowest levels of scorpionic development, implicit in this classic spiritual allegory:
One lazy afternoon day a turtle was swimming happily along a lake. As the turtle was nearing land, he heard a scorpion hail it from the muddy shore. The scorpion, being a very poor swimmer, asked the turtle if he would carry him on his back across the lake. The turtle thought it was the craziest thing he ever heard: “Why would I carry you on my back?” he boomed. ‘You’ll sting me while I’m swimming and I’ll drown.”
“My dear turtle friend,” laughed the scorpion, “if I were to sting you, you would drown and I would go down with you and drown as well. Now where is the logic in that?”
The turtle pondered this for a moment, and eventually saw the logic in the scorpion’s statement. “You’re right!” said the turtle with a smile. “Hop on!” So, the scorpion climbed aboard and the turtle paddled his big fins in the water. Halfway across the lake the scorpion gave the turtle a big sting, and he started to drown. As they both sank into the water the turtle turned to the scorpion with a tear in his eye. “My dear scorpion friend, why did you sting me? Now we are both going to drown,” said the turtle, gasping for air. “Where is the… logic in that?”
“It has nothing to do with logic” the scorpion sadly replied. “It’s just my nature.”
Part of our lessons this year will be to watch out for those still at a scorpion level of development and to stay out of their way. This does not imply judgment, but rather accepting that they’re where they need to be in their karmic evolution. The only question we need to ask ourselves is: “What am I doing here with them?”
Here’s a perfect parable for Jupiter in Scorpio:
“If a man is crossing a river
And an empty boat collides with his own skiff,
Even though he be a bad-tempered man
He will not become very angry.
But if he sees a man in the boat,
He will shout at him to steer clear.
If the shout is not heard, he will shout again,
And yet again, and begin cursing.
And all because there is somebody in the boat.
Yet if the boat were empty,
He would not be shouting, and not angry.
If you can empty your own boat
Crossing the river of the world,
No one will oppose you,
No one will seek to harm you.”
From “The Empty Boat” by Chuang Tzu
One of the favorite responses which I share with clients who are upset about other people’s life choices is: “Not your business!” This means recognizing we are powerless over other’s karmic unfolding, including colleagues, friends, grown children, as well as romantic and business partners.
And while other’s karma unfolding is not our business, as we didn’t cause it and thus cannot heal it, our job is to ask our self what we’re doing in the relationship and be clear about our reasons for choosing to be present. Then we can make conscious choices based on healthy boundaries to witness from a nonattached but open-hearted, compassionate space and be of service if we feel called upon to do so. Therein lies the skillful means for maintaining our ongoing equanimity and peace of mind.
A special note for those of us ages 57 to 68: Traditionally, Jupiter rules the Sixth Age of humanity. This is when we’ve already reached a certain level of success in life, and our job is to nurture and maintain what we’ve created. But more importantly, it’s our time in life to focus more of our energy with increasing awareness on the greater spiritual realities of this life and beyond.
Wishing us all a joyful Jupiter-in-Scorpio year of going deep, enjoying the intensity above all, minding our own business and doing that exceptionally well.
In Joy,
J o a n
