“Rage, Rage Against the Dying of the Light”

DYLAN THOMAS

Dear One,

Since the presidential election last year, many of us have been experiencing a range of emotions that cycle from shock and denial, to anger and depression, all the way through to surrender and acceptance of What Is. (And perhaps, this past month, just a bit of glee bubbling up with the Mueller indictments and midterm elections giving us a glimpse of Light at the end of the tunnel.) Sometimes this emotional loop can occur all in one day, especially if we indulge in watching too much CNN or other news sources.

But as I wrote about in depth last December in my “Coming Attractions” newsletter, if we allow ourselves to get stuck in certain parts of this emotional loop, especially justifiable anger, these toxic emotions can truly bring us down and make us ill on many levels. For more, I encourage you to read:

2017 COMING ATTRACTIONS: “Greatest Hits of the Kali Yuga* (Darkest Age)”

You may be familiar with the five stages of grief, which was first introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross  in her 1969 book On Death and Dying. Inspired by her work with terminally ill patients and those that have lost loved ones, the five stages are traditionally listed as: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

These stages are not necessarily experienced by everyone going through some sort of loss and are not by any means a linear and predictable progression, but rather a grouping of five common experiences for the bereaved that can occur in any order, if at all. Often, people experience several stages in a “roller coaster” effect—switching between two or more stages, returning to one or more multiple times before working through it.

In the past year, many of us have been dealing with a similar roller coaster of emotional reactions triggered by the seemingly dark times we’re moving through on a mass scale.  But, if we cling to our anger, depression, denial or rage in a non-productive way without moving through to surrender, acceptance and faith in the Flow of Life as perfect in the divine plan, then we’re not making the best use of this time for our soul growth and spiritual evolution.

Our choice is to either resign ourselves to letting external events rule us or in cultivating an internal tone of peace and equanimity with What Is, and allowing this inner tone to affect the mass tone in a ripple effect, starting with our personal reality.

I have adapted the traditional stages of grief for the present time to help us accelerate as we navigate our way through them:

1. Shock and Denial. Last year, how many of us reacted election night with numbed disbelief, wishing that a mistake had been made and it was all some sort of sick cosmic joke? This initial shock provided us with some emotional protection from feeling overwhelmed all at once and may have lasted for weeks or months. During this period life felt exceptionally chaotic with fears arising of what the future might bring. As the shock and denial wears off, it’s replaced with the growing pains of accepting the reality of What Is, but not usually until we also experiencing some of the following emotions.

2.Anger. When we recognize that denial cannot continue, no matter how much we anesthetize ourselves, we become frustrated. One of the psychological responses we might feel during this phase is: “How can this be happening and who is to blame?”  Frustration gives way to anger, and we may lash out and blame anyone who seems to be even a small part of the problem for our upset. This is the time for us to work on releasing and dissolving all variations of anger as they arise. These include:  Intolerance, snobbishness, tension, distrust, contempt, rigidity, sarcasm, anxiety, envy, hatred, cynicism, suspicion, discontent, malice, jealousy, frustration, impatience, justifiable anger, resentments, hostility and rage.

3. Depression. The above range of toxic emotions can easily lead to depression, especially if we repress, deny or judge these feelings as unacceptable for too long a period. During this stage, despair at the state of the world can set in and we may shut-down, become gloomy, refuse to socialize as usual and spend much of our time feeling mournful.

A long period of sad reflection is a normal stage of grief and loss and not toxic in and of itself. In fact, during this time, we may finally realize the true magnitude of living in the Dark Age of the Kali Yuga. This depressing thought can unsurprisingly trigger feelings of emptiness or hopelessness. But it’s all a natural part of the mourning process, just as long as we don’t get stuck here.

4. Acceptance. In this penultimate stage, we come to surrender to the reality of What Is, just the way it is, at least for now. This allows us to work with the present moment as our point of power rather than resisting What Is, which is disempowering.  From this stance, we can start experiencing a return to a more stable emotional tone epitomized by peace of mind and equanimity.  As our depression and sadness start to lift, we may also stop somatizing many of the physical symptoms that have been plaguing us. Daily spiritual practices are an immense help at stabilizing this renewed, more balanced way of Being. For more:

5. Joy in Being. As our mind starts working in a positive way again, we become more functional and find realistic solutions to the problems and challenges posed by life in this Darker Age.  During this, the last of the five stages of mourning in the Kali Yuga, we experience the fruits of a daily maintenance of our spiritual condition which allows joy in Being to spontaneously arise again.

For more on this:  On Pleasure, Joy, and Bliss

While we may never return to the carefree, untroubled state that existed before the events of the last year, we will start to look forward and actually plan things for the future once we’re maintaining our primary emotional tone at stages four and five.          Eventually, we’ll be able to reflect on the hope of the Obama years without pain; sadness and nostalgia, yes, but the wrenching pain will be gone. We’ll once again anticipate and enjoy good times and find joy in the experience of living again.

Added to the above five-stage emotional range that many of us have been cycling through, we may also have, from within our psychic or soul-level memory, visceral recollections of times in other incarnations that felt equally dark: times of war, plagues, famines, earth changes, etc. So, this is certainly not the first “Dark Age” our souls have been through.

Here’s a new acronym for these times: PTKSD, i.e., post-traumatic karmic stress disorder.  And while I’ve always observed PTKSD as a primary “presenting symptom” in clients before they heal their karmic memories through past-life regression therapy, I’m now observing this disorder as a psychic epidemic on a mass scale. For more on healing PTKSD, please check outPSYCHIC THERAPY

This means that the dark times of the Kali Yuga that we’re fully in now are triggering cellular memories in our psychic bodies from past lives of other catastrophic and cataclysmic events that we witnessed and/or experienced.  So, we need to remember the mantra: “That was then and this is now” as we work with the present moment as our point of power to heal the past, present and future.

This gives us the opportunity to gather our forces and continuously illuminate the darkness around us from the Light within in a mass ripple effect and hold the faith that we’re doing what we can do to affect the probabilities on a daily basis.  This is, of course, in addition to: voting in elections, contributing to life force-enhancing causes, as well as taking action in whichever areas our own personal predisposition spontaneously inspires us to help spread the Light in.

Please know that you’ll have my heart-felt gratitude for your gift, and that any amount, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated!

In closing, please remember that we can start the day and even our entire incarnation over at any time by rebooting our conscious awareness in the present moment as our point of power in the eternal Now.

To do this reboot, it helps to recall that the mantra “That was then and this is now” also applies to past actions and habitual mental and emotional patterns in this life or past ones. So, refreshing the screen of our perceptions and cultivating a tone of surrender, acceptance, peace and equanimity in the Flow—right here and right now—allows us to let go of labeling and judgments based on any of our past behaviors on any level.

This is especially important if you’ve noticed a persistent pattern of indulging in any of the above listed varieties of anger, justifiable anger being one of the most insidious and dangerous emotions of the bunch.  Too much chronic anger and resentment can make quite the toxic emotional stew for anyone to be swimming around in and spewing out unconsciously. I’m sure most of us know at least a few people whose energy field is a natural repellent.

Like attracts like, and it’s our job, especially now in our year-end soul review, to upgrade and refine our internal operating systems. The best book to read to assist you in working with toxic emotions mindfully as a daily spiritual practice is by Thich Nhat Hanh: Transformation and Healing

And, of course, if you’d like more customized support, I’m available to teach you all the tools you need for maintaining peace in your inner kingdom.  For more info:
